World premiere on Super Monday with Udo Jürgens
This year again, the Swiss Indoors begins with a smash and reaches for the stars. Top entertainer Udo Jürgens and the Orchestra Pepe Lienhard will open the Swiss Indoors for the traditional mix of sport and culture on the Center Court of the St. Jakobshalle at 5.30 p.m. on Super Monday, 21 October 2013. The successful composer and writer of more than 1,000 songs, best sellers and musicals has never been to New York nor, to date, to Switzerland’s leading sporting event in Basel. Under the patronage of the Schweizer Illustrierte and Manor, Udo Jürgens will uphold the musical tradition of the star guests invited to Basel, which in the past years included the powerful voices of Montserrat Caballé, Paul Potts and Freddy Sahin-Scholl.
Overture with high-flyer Rafael Nadal
After the harmonious melodies, the man who has been composing most of the verses for a triumphal march in world tennis over recent weeks makes his first appearance at the Basel Tournament at 6.30 p.m. Rafael Nadal, who has won the Roland Garros trophy for a record eighth time, returns to the tournament at which he made his début ten years ago as a seventeen-year-old, curly-headed youth. His knee injury now a thing of the past, the Spanish king of clay is enjoying the comeback of the century with seven tournament victories so far this year. Bearing this in mind, Nadal becomes the hottest contender for the no. 1 ranking in men’s tennis since the Iberian only has to make up 45 ATP points on the previous year, while the leader, Novak Djokovic, needs 6,800. Nadal has already qualified for the ATP World Tour Finals in London, where the court surface and the balls are the same as those used at the Swiss Indoors Basel.
The day of Roger Federer’s first-round match is still unknown
Swiss Indoors spectators are eagerly awaiting the duel between Rafael Nadal and Basel’s record winner Roger Federer. The technically gifted player has not yet named his preference for the first-round match and is leaving the day of his overture open.
Title defender Del Potro and newcomer Wawrinka enhance the top quartet
The current events in the tennis circus have further enhanced the explosive level of performance among the players in Basel. Currently, four of the men starters registered rank in the top ten, namely Roger Federer (ATP 3), Rafael Nadal (ATP 5), Juan Martin Del Potro (Basel’s title holder, ATP 8) and Stanislas Wawrinka (ATP 10). Japan’s rising star Kei Nishikori is already at ATP ranking 13 and the Canadian Milos Raonic at 15.
