Tomas Berdych: A turnaround in fortune
Tennis can be a strange sport sometimes. Czech superstar Tomas Berdych, the number 2 seed in Basel, bowed out of the tournament in the first round - and then, the day after his bitter defeat, it emerges that he has secured his place in the line-up for the ATP Finals in London. This was established by the ATP World Tour computer on Wednesday. Berdych was delighted to have achieved this season's primary objective. Last year he made it to the semi-final in London's O2 Arena. The elite athlete, who also led his country to the Davis Cup Final for the second time in succession, was beaten 6:4, 6:7, 6:7 in Basel by Croat Ivo Karlovic in what was a dramatic affair. Here are the match highlights: Berdych failed to convert a match point and did not face a single break point during the entire game! Karlovic continued to live up to his reputation as a man with a rocket-like serve (23 aces). It was like watching a cowboy pull the trigger in a scene from the Wild West. For Berdych, figuratively speaking, it was as though the air was full of lead. Karlovic is so dangerous because his serve is capable of disrupting his opponents’ rhythm.
