Will Del Potro celebrate his 300th victory in Basel?
The beautiful Gabriela Sabatini once confessed that she sometimes deliberately lost matches during her career to avoid having to speak to reporters. This is an usual attitude for an athlete. Sabatini's compatriot Juan Martin Del Potro, on the other hand, is cut from an entirely different cloth. The Argentine does the business on court whenever he can. The reigning Swiss Indoors champion got his tournament underway on Wednesday with a victory over Swiss-Finn Henri Laaksonen. As the world number 5, Del Potro, who is also known as the Tower of Tandil due to his size, is the top South American. He needs only two more wins to reach a landmark 300 victories in the ATP World Tour and he can accomplish this feat in Basel. He was recently promised 350 bottles of beer from tour sponsor Corona for winning the title in Tokyo. The beer will be delivered directly to his home free of charge, but we hope that he will wait until after the end of tournament before drinking it. Del Potro is highly touted to be inducted into Argentina's tennis hall of fame alongside greats such as Guillermo Vilas and David Nalbandian. There is also Alberto Mancini and Guillermo Coria. After all, Argentines tend to come in groups.
