Fame is a burden, as they say. In the case of the Croat Marin Čilić, this has seemingly had no effect in Basel. The Swiss Indoors Basel title holder strolled through the first round in the St. Jakobshalle in economy drive. His first opponent, the German Florian Mayer, was an unlucky Lucky Loser, being obliged to withdraw after one set due to injury. But victory is victory, and the Croat noted a positive knock-on effect. Thanks to this win, he has already qualified for the ATP Finals in London. «In four years I am now going to the O2 Arena for the third time. The Masters is one of my targets for the season», explained the Croat with the powerful serve. Čilić laid the foundation for this year’s very good season on grass in Britain: at the London Queen’s Club he appeared in the final, as he did three weeks later at Wimbledon, where in the tournament’s final match he came up against grass supremo Roger Federer. Čilić is celebrating his 400th singles victory, climbing to third place in the Croatian all-time winning order, behind Goran Ivanišević and Federer coach Ivan Ljubičić. In his private life, Čilić will also soon be in seventh heaven, as according to the Swiss daily «Sonntags-Blick» his wedding no longer lies in the distant future. Our congratulations!
