In Basel, the seeded players rule with an iron fist. The top four seeds, number one (Federer), two (Čilić), three (Goffin) and four (Del Potro) have all reached the semi-finals. A surprise guest in the quarter-finals was a qualifier, the number 100 seed, a man by the name of Márton Fucsovics (photo). The 25-year-old Hungarian has made it this far for the first time at an ATP event. The former top junior has experienced a long barren patch, as Zoltán Kuhárszky, the former expert in Swiss service at the association and GC Zurich, mentioned. Fucsovics hails from the east of Hungary close to the Ukrainian border. Thanks to a private sponsor, he was able to afford academy visits in France and Germany. Now he is with the association in Budapest, the young professional has his own space, and his attitude has improved. Much is new in the East, including an intensive training centre. At the Junior EM in the Swiss resort of Klosters, a Hungarian by the name of Zsombor Piros won this year. And in the Davis Cup the national team has climbed into the world group after a play-off against Russia. The case of Fucsovics reminds the Swiss a little of the same-aged Henri Laaksonen, whose career also requires patience and detours.
