Big-time tennis firepower in the first round

22. Okt 2022

The draw for the main tournament has served up some big-time tennis fireworks in the first round. The number-one-seeded NextGen superstar Carlos Alcaraz (ATP 1) will meet Jack Draper (ATP 48) in his first-round match on Monday 24/10/22. The 20-year-old Englishman improved his career-best ranking 20 times in the past year, cracking the top 200 in February and the top 100 in June before reaching his highest ranking to date (ATP 46) in September.

Casper Ruud (ATP 3) will also face a tough challenge in Stan Wawrinka (ATP 193). But the Norwegian will be keen to put bring his best to the court as he seeks to settle a score with Carlos Alcaraz after his loss to him in the US Open final.

The two Swiss talents Marc-Andrea Hüsler (ATP 62) and Dominic Stricker (ATP 136), who both received wildcards, will meet similarly strong opponents in their first-round matches. Marc-Andrea Hüsler won his first title on the ATP Tour at the Sofia Open ATP 250 and will meet the in-form Canadian Félix Auger-Aliassime (ATP 10). And in his Basel debut, the 20-year-old Emmental-native Dominic Stricker will face the big-serving American Maxime Cressy (ATP 33).

The veteran Belgian David Goffin (ATP 58) received the third wildcard and will join the main draw along with Mackenzie McDonald (ATP 74) (Special Exempt).
