Favourites advance as the Swiss collapse’

25. Okt 2023

The last sixteen have now been decided after the conclusion of first-round matches on day three of the tournament. Spectators at the St. Jakobshalle were treated to intense match play, exhilarating rallies and countless emotion-laden moments during the battles between the 32 best players in the line-up. Just one thing was missing: upsets by Switzerland’s top tennis pros. After yesterday’s elimination of Stan Wawrinka, 21-year-old Leandro Riedi was also defeated in his first match against next-gen superstar Felix Auger-Aliassime (ATP 19) today. But the reigning title-holder is not the only top player to put on an impressive show at this year’s Swiss Indoors Basel so far. Other top contenders Holger Rune (ATP 6), Casper Ruud (ATP 8), Taylor Fritz (ATP 9), Hubert Hurkacz (ATP 11) and Alex de Minaur (ATP 13) confirmed their billing as pre-tournament favourites and moved on to a round of sixteen stacked with match-ups as nail-biting as they get.
