Holger Rune and Felix Auger-Aliassime make a strong showing in the round of sixteen
The tournament’s top seed, Next Gen superstar Holger Rune (ATP 6), and the reigning title holder Felix Auger-Aliassime (ATP 19) both gave an impressive performance in their round-of-sixteen matches. In just one hour and 29 minutes, the 20-year-old Dane Holger Rune triumphed over Argentina’s Sebastian Baez (ATP 29), who has already won three titles this year, in straight sets (7-6, 6-1). The 23-year-old Canadian Félix Auger-Aliassime also enjoyed a straight-sets win on Center Court at St. Jakob against the in-form Botic van de Zandschulp (ATP 65), with a score of 6-4, 6-2. In the next round, he will come up against qualifier Alexander Shevchenko, who has been playing some career-best tennis during the tournament so far.
Dominic Stricker does it again!
In the round of sixteen, the young Swiss star Dominic Stricker showed his class and defeated Casper Ruud (ATP 8) in a riveting three-set match. With this second victory over a top-10 player after winning against Stefanos Tsitsipas (ATP 7) at the US Open, the local favourite has not only secured a place in the Next Gen Finals, but has also consolidated his position in tennis’s top 100. The fiercely fought match provided plenty of emotion-laden moments at St. Jakobshalle and once again highlighted the extraordinary concentration of talent at this year’s Swiss Indoors Basel, which fans across the region have been quick to celebrate.
After his victory over three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka, Alexander Shevchenko (ATP 83) has now rounded out his newcomer fairytale by beating America’s Taylor Fritz (ATP 9) in an extraordinary career-first victory over a top-10 player.
