World tennis in a nutshell

This year’s field is absolutely top-notch
From 24 October to 1 November 2026, the eyes of the tennis world will be on the sporting and social highlight of the year: the Swiss Indoors in Basel. The entry list is a microcosm of world tennis today, replete with top-shelf names and title contenders. The field’s quality poses a daunting challenge for every player. All 23 direct qualifiers for the main draw are among the top 48 in the ATP rankings. This includes almost all the Next Gen superstars, now fixtures in the tour’s top echelons, along with a host of other world-class players. Massive rallies and stunning surprises are guaranteed from day one.

The question of all questions – who will come out on top?
The outcome of the 55th edition of the tournament is more exciting and open than ever before. The favourites include Ben Shelton (USA, ATP 4), Félix Auger-Aliassime (Canada, ATP 5), Arthur Fils (France, ATP 9), Rafael Jódar (Spain, ATP 13), Holger Rune (Denmark, PR ATP 14), Jiří Lehečka (Czech Republic, ATP 23) and João Fonseca (Brazil, ATP 29). The young stars will be put to the test by a pack of dangerous opponents in excellent form, including Taylor Fritz (USA, ATP 12), Valentin Vacherot (Monaco, ATP 18), Alexander Bublik (Kazakhstan, ATP 20), Casper Ruud (Norway, ATP 21), Alejandro Davidovich Fokina (Spain, ATP 26), Hubert Hurkacz (Poland, ATP 39), Stefanos Tsitsipas (Greece, ATP 44) and Denis Shapovalov (Canada, ATP 46). In with an outside chance are Alejandro Tabilo (Chile, ATP 31), Ugo Humbert (France, ATP 32), Alex Michelsen (USA, ATP 34), and Zizou Bergs (Belgium, ATP 38). Bergs caused quite a stir in Shanghai this week with a victory over Carlos Alcaraz.

Stan bids farewell
As previously announced, Stan Wawrinka will end his career in Basel. A tribute to the three-time Grand Slam winner will take place on Super Monday (26 October), and his first-round match will be on Tuesday (27 October). First-class qualifying Even the qualifying matches will offer spectators top-flight tennis. All players are in the top 80 in the world, including entrants from our neighbouring countries: Yannick Hanfmann, Jan-Lennard Struff and Daniel Altmaier of Germany as well as Quentin Halys and Kyrian Jacquet of France.

Swiss hopes
Apart from Stan Wawrinka, Swiss hopes rest on the following players, who will join the field on wild cards. Whether they play in the main draw or the qualifying tournament will be decided at the end of this week. Henry Bernet, Remy Bertola, Mika Brunold, Jérôme Kym and Dominic Stricker.
