The Shanghai Sensation Arrives in Basel!

ATP tour 500 – EUR 2.523 million – 18 to 26 October 2025

Valentin Vacherot Makes Tennis History
The Swiss Indoors Basel, which will kick off this Saturday with a high-calibre qualifying tournament, have pulled off a major coup by securing the participation of Valentin Vacherot. The sensational winner of the Shanghai Masters will be on display at Switzerland’s premier tennis event thanks to a wild card. The surprise triumph of the Monegasque player at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Shanghai stunned the entire tennis world. Never since the creation of the ATP Tour in 1990 has a qualifier with such a low ranking (204) won a Masters tournament. The 26-year-old from Monaco has made a spectacular leap in the rankings, soaring to world No. 40. However, he is unlikely to be seeded in Basel, given the exceptional strength of the field: three Top 10 players (Taylor Fritz ATP 4, Ben Shelton ATP 6, Holger Rune ATP 10) and all direct entrants ranked within the world’s Top 43.

Historic: A Duel Between Cousins
Under the heat of Shanghai, spectators witnessed several tennis miracles. The final, with a first prize of USD 1.124 million, turned into an all-European battle between two cousins. Both Valentin Vacherot and runner-up Arthur Rinderknech hail from Monaco. The two close friends even played together on the University of Texas college team. The final score (4–6, 6–3, 6–3) reflected an intense battle — and remarkably, Vacherot came back from a one-set deficit six times during the tournament!

A Rematch in Basel?
The Asian swing was far from favorable for the five Top 10 stars who entered. Vacherot defeated Danish star Holger Rune and, in the semifinals, took down the record-holding Major champion Novak Djokovic. Lady Luck also smiled on him when one of his section’s favourites, Jannik Sinner, stumbled in the third round. Vacherot impressed with his physical game, powerful serves, and solid defensive play. He could face his cousin again in Basel, as Rinderknech is also on the entry list — though he will only make the main draw if two players withdraw.
