The four semifinalists at this year’s Swiss Indoors Basel wowed the 8,600 spectators at the St. Jakobshalle on Saturday with world-class tennis.
In his speech at the opening ceremony last Monday, Tournament President Roger Brennwald set the stage: ‘At the epicentre of a tempestuous moment in world tennis, we are witnessing a phenomenal and irresistible wave of the next generation!’
Apt words to describe the course of the tournament thus far, and even more fitting for the final ahead.
Awaiting Basel tomorrow will be the first meeting of two rising stars gearing up for greatness. The Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime (ATP 9) continued his winning streak today, beating no less an opponent than world number one Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets, with a 6-3, 6-2 scoreline. The match between Holger Rune (ATP 15) and Roberto Bautista Agut (ATP 22) turned into a real war of attrition and topped the two-hour mark. In the end, it was the 19-year-old Dane who kept his nerve, taking both sets in the tiebreak and securing his ticket to the final.
A new name will be added to the list of victors of Swiss Indoors Basel tomorrow.
