The second day of the Swiss Indoors Basel tournament was all about the Next Gen, but it also ended on an emotional high thanks to local favourite Stan Wawrinka.
The first surprise came from the 19-year-old Brazilian João Fonseca (ATP 46). In a strong performance, he defeated defending champion Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard (ATP 33) in straight sets (7–6, 6–3) with a varied style of play and steely nerves in the first set tiebreak. Fonseca made the most of his chances and confirmed why he is considered one of the most talented young players in his age group.
Ben Shelton (ATP 6) also prevailed after a tough battle. The second-seeded American overcame Poland’s Kamil Majchrzak (ATP 70) in three tightly fought sets, winning 6–7, 6–3, 7–6. With his powerful serve and bold play in crucial moments, he left no doubt why he is regarded as one of the most spectacular players of the new generation.
To cap off the evening, Stan Wawrinka (ATP 158) delivered the Swiss success story of the day. The three-time Grand Slam winner beat Miomir Kecmanovic (ATP 52) in straight sets 6–1, 7–6 and thrilled the crowd with his precision and determination.
Two Next Gen victories and a Swiss success – Tuesday in Basel offered tennis at the highest level and an atmosphere that whets the appetite for more.
